Good for:

Keeping in touch with family and friends and sharing content

How it works:

WhatsApp is a popular chat app that works on data as well as wifi. You will need a mobile number to register the free Whatsapp account, then an SMS will be sent to you to verify the account. Then, add a profile name (or nickname). A photo can be added too, or left empty if you prefer.

You can only chat with your own contacts who are already on Whatsapp — and chances are, you will already see some of them there. Click ‘Start Chat’ to send messages. To avoid typing, you can hold down the microphone function to record a voice message. You can also add new contacts to the app. Chat groups can be created by adding friends or family or work mates. The app is not available in China, Iran, North Korea, and some countries in the Middle East, though some users in these countries use it through a VPN.

A warning: From time to time, you’ll likely receive unwanted or scam messages. Remember to be extra careful about accepting messages from unknown contacts. And never share any sensitive information like your location, banking details or passwords. Keep your personal information safe for a safe experience!

The good:

A great app for keeping in touch with contacts

The bad:

Useful only if you have contacts who already use the app
