Word of the Day

A flawed English vocabulary app

Good for:

Not much right now? Does not deliver what it promises at the moment.

How it works:

The homepage of the app asks you to guess the word of the day from a scramble of the alphabets of that word. There’s an option to skip this. Hit the keypad button below ‘Skip’.

On the homepage, there is also an option to play the audio to hear the word of the day. Hit the keypad button below ‘Sound’.

The next page will show you the word of the day and its definition. You can also hit the button ‘More info’ to see information on the word’s part of speech (noun, verb, adjective), and an example of how the word is used in a sentence.

The good:

Unfortunately Kobi did not find anything good about this app when he tested it in February 2022.

The bad:

One very troubling thing was that the word of the day ‘engouement’ had the definition listed ‘infatuation, an unreasoning fondness’. The English grammar was incorrect, which made Kobi have doubts about the credibility of the app (it should be ‘an unreasonable fondness’).

Even more concerning was the word ‘repat’. The app listed the definition of this word as a person who moves back to their own country, a repatriate. However, when Kobi checked the Merriam Webster and Cambridge dictionaries, the word ‘repat’ wasn’t in them. The sentence example given by the app was a real life person talking about repatriation, referring to them as ‘repat days’. It seems to Kobi the app isn’t very rigorous in ensuring that all words are legitimately part of the English language. Kobi would advise KaiOS users to check the meanings of the words in a trusted dictionary to be sure. Or better still, not to use this app as a way to expand your vocabulary.

Minor in comparison to these, is that the font used for the word of the day, in full caps and styled like black marker, is difficult to read.

It was also annoying to have to go through the first page asking me to guess what the word of the day is from a scramble of the alphabets. There’s an option to skip this (hit the ‘Skip’ button) but it felt like a tedious and unnecessary step.
