Heart Rate Monitor

Check your heartbeat

Good for:

Knowing how fast your heart beats during activities

How it works:

This app reads your heart rate by using your phone camera to capture the changes in blood volume under the surface of your skin.

When you open the app, remember to scroll down and read the disclaimer. It will explain how the app works, and clarify that the app is not a replacement for a professional heart rate monitor. Once you’re ready, press ‘Ok’.

You will see a heart shape in the middle of the screen. The ‘History’ option on the bottom left allows you to access previous readings. The ‘Help’ option on the bottom right allows you to adjust your age for accurate reading, and access the help menu.

When you’re all set, press the mic button to start and put your finger over the camera lens. A pulse monitor will appear, and the heart shape will display your heart rate in beats per minute (BPM). It will also state the corresponding activity (like resting, working out, burning fat).

To stop, press ‘Stop’ and save your final result. The saved results will appear in ‘History’.

The good:

A neat tool to learn about how the heart responds to different levels of activity

The bad:

It’s not very accurate, sometimes it indicated that Kobi was doing extremely intense activities even when I was resting! Well, it is a phone app after all.
